Preliminary Steps toward Artificial Protocell Computation

چکیده
Protocells are hypothesised as a transitional phase in the origin of life, prior to the evolution of fully functional prokaryotic cells [1, 2]. The work reported here is being done in the context of the PACE1 project, which is investigating the fabrication of artificial protocells de novo. We consider here the important open question of whether or how articifial protocells (if or when they are successfully fabricated) might be applied as “computing” devices—what sort of computing might they be suitable for, and how might they be “programmed”? We also present some preliminary analysis of a crude model of such “evolutionary protocell computation”.

Synthetic signalling protocell networks as models of neural computation
Modern conventional computers are programmable, predictable and relatively easy to understand and engineered —at least compared to most complex non-linear systems. These properties are the result of various dynamical constraints that are universal to conventional computers, such as the clock mechanism that synchronises the update of logic gates and other components; the ubiquitous discretizatio...
متن کاملArtificial Morphogenesis as an Example of Embodied Computation
Embodied computation is computation in which information processing emerges from and directly governs physical processes. As an example we present artificial morphogenesis, which uses computational processes analogous to those in embryological development in order to assemble complex physical structures. We discuss the requirements for a formalism or programming language for embodied computatio...
متن کاملDesigning a Protocell - Attempt at a Systemic Design Linking Information, Metabolism and Container
Living cells are in many respects the ultimate nanoscale chemical system. Within a very small volume they can produce highly specific and useful products by extracting resources and free energy from the environment. They are self-assembled and selforganized, as well as capable of self-repair and self-replication. Designing artificial chemical systems bottom up (artificial cells 1 or protocells ...
متن کاملMulti-level Selectional Stalemate in a Simple Artificial Chemistry
We describe a simple artificial chemistry which abstracts a small number of key features from the origin of life “replicator world” hypotheses. We report how this can already give rise to moderately complex and counter-intuitive evolutionary phenomena, including macroevolutionary deterioration in replication fidelity (which corresponds to intrinsic replicator fitness in this model). We briefly ...
متن کاملLife Cycle of a Minimal Protocell - A Dissipative Particle Dynamics Study
Cross-reactions and other systematic difficulties generated by the coupling of functional chemical subsystems pose the largest challenge for assembling a viable protocell in the laboratory. Our current work seeks to identify and clarify such key issues as we represent and analyze in simulation a full implementation of a minimal protocell. Using a 3D dissipative particle dynamics simulation meth...
